The famous traditional music festival commemorating the renowned fiddler John “The Tae” Gallagher

The committee of the Cup of Tae Festival are so honoured that Dermot Byrne has accepted the Guest of Honour award for the Cup of Tae Festival 2020 on May Bank Holiday Weekend. Without doubt one of the truly outstanding accordion players of his generation, Dermot has played and been in of some of the most outstanding musical session of this generation, having played with the best musicians in the world and at the greatest venues most of us only dream about. The wonderful thing this year at the Cup of Tae Festival, Dermot will do a masterclass on accordion. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn from the master. Spaces at this school will be limited. A weekend not to miss.

Friday May 1st


7pm: Early registration for the schools of music

Classes in: accordion masterclass, fiddle masterclass, fiddle moderate, also accordion and whistle for beginners. Nesbitt Arms Hotel


8pm: Special Guest Dermot Byrne (a concert in his honour)

Friends and guests come together to honour this wonderful musician and acknowledge his musical genius. A special event not to be missed. Book early as seating limited at the Nesbitt Arms Hotel


10pm: Musical sessions throughout the town


Saturday May 2nd


9am to 10am: Final registration at St. Mary’s School for all the classes in the schools of music


1pm: Musical Recital at the Heritage Centre with Ards Ceoltas Group

One of the highlights for many as this talented group is joined by many visiting musicians and we are so proud of our local star and prodigy of the great John the Tae the popular Michael O’Rourke


3pm: Open air sessions on the streets as our many guests join in with local talent


5pm: Sessions in various venues in town


7pm: The Packie Manus Session in the Heritage Centre

This is a wonderful event as all visiting musicians are welcomed to perform and under the guidance of James Keeney tells the stories and times of the great Packie Manus Byrne


9pm: The Beehive Concert

Special guests Dermot Byrne will join friends and visiting musicians for a concert of the best traditional music can offer


10pm: Musical sessions throughout the town


Sunday May 3rd

10.30am: Schools of music resume in St Mary’s School


1pm: Musical Recital resumes in Heritage Centre


3pm: The students attending the schools of music present a session of what skills they have learnt


4pm: Open air musical sessions on the diamond


5pm: Musical sessions in most venues


8pm: The John the Tae Concert

A special concert where visiting and local musicians perform in the memory of the great man himself


10pm: Musical sessions throughout town
